1/100 00 Gundam Complete!!

31 12 2008

This looks like my last post for 2008, as well as my last model for 2008 as well. I’m surprised I managed to finish it up so soon. Of course, not exactly the fastest review but I’m glad there weren’t many hitches along the way.

If you don’t see pictures, it means I’m currently taking photos of the model and am trying to upload them onto the blog ASAP. Uploading pictures takes the most time when preparing an entry so I’m writing this while the last few parts are drying. I will also update more content into this entry after publishing it.

SHF Masked Rider Gatack

29 12 2008

SHF Masked Rider Gatack

Taking a short break from painting my 00 Gundam, I finally got my long overdue SHF Masked Rider Gatack yesterday. The shop also had the Kabuto movie riders Hercus, Ketaros and Caucasus but I wasn’t keen on spending cash on three similar-looking riders that only appeared in a movie and not the series. I also didn’t really like the design of Caucasus’ head and the SHF yellow reminded me of yellow post-its and not gold.

Licence Get

27 12 2008

License Get

One Licence to beat all the other “licences” lol.

Taken with my brother’s camera phone because my camera’s battery decided to give up after taking 140 pictures without charging.

One less excuse for me not to work on my models. Too bad now my rooms are in a mess so I can’t resume painting. :/

Moving Things

23 12 2008

Moving Things

Had to move a shelf from the study to the bedroom and this mess resulted after clearing it out. For the full size image, click here, and here for an uglier one but with flash on. There are more stuff, primarily trading figures, Lego and various old Choro-Qs and such but they were all piled in a box.

Now that I have an airbrush, looks like this mess will grow bigger still. I think I may have to keep some of the older, lousier models to make space for the better ones. Worse, I might have to discard some of them along with their boxes and manuals. So if anyone wants them, they’re open for negotiations. Sorry, the front row of SH/SHF figures are excluded.

Very unfortunately, none of the models have undergone the airbrush treatment.

Below is a list of what’s in the photo.

PG Gundam Astray and a whole lot of other Gundams (updated)

22 12 2008

PG Gundam Astray

First piece of news I got today from Toysdaily – PG Gundam Astray Red Frame announced for a March 2009 release. I am pretty surprised by the news. It’s based on the PG Strike frame and includes its infamous Gerbera Straight katana. The image links to the thread on Toysdaily.

I also see quite a number of fellow bloggers have posted about it. The Toysdaily thread above also features a scratch-built Gundam Astray based off the PG Strike frame. Other upcoming stuff in the link below.

1/100 00 Gundam: Painting

20 12 2008

1/100 00 Gundam

A shot of some of the white parts being held to dry. Progress has been slow (but way faster than my previous Tallgeese) as I have been spending a sizable portion of my long leave juggling the following: helping my mum out with painting the house, playing Gundam Battle Universe and slacking to enjoy this long leave, escaping from the reality that my conscription has yet to end.

Since the last update which was about a week ago, I have airbrushed the clear blue, clear green, clear red and red parts. I spent most of today painting the white parts which needed two coats to cover up the grey Mr. Surfacer completely. The large volume of paint consumed was a new surprise to me as I used up slightly over a bottle of Mr. Color Flat White. I also meddled with the airbrush a little and lowered the paint control lever tension, but unscrewed the wrong screw and had to strip and reassemble it.

In other news, while the MG 1/100 Sinanju Ver. Ka has yet to be released, Japanese bloggers have already completed it, like Gunpla Secret Factory for example. His completed model will be sent to Hobby Shop Midori for display.

In more unrelated news, I have been fooling around with my camera.

Annoying Upstairs Neighbours

Several days ago I was about to commence airbrushing some parts when this happened. My annoying upstairs neighbours suddenly blasted water out their bathroom window. Thank goodness my study room window (where I snapped this from) was closed, or whatever water/sewage would have splashed onto my work table and laundry. For reference, the pair of old, paint-stained windows belongs to my house. When I found out and whipped out the camera, they stopped blasting water so there was no chance of me catching them red-handed. :( The next day, they dumped a whole truckload of water from their window right above this very window in the evening. Once again I was lucky not to be airbrushing. I actually blogged about them previously, and here is the link.

Annoying Upstairs Neighbours

Look at how wet the ground is. Wonder if anyone was unlucky enough to be caught in the high-pressure blast.

Now on to something unrelated. As the curtains in the bedroom were removed to allow for painting the walls, the room was exposed to all the lighting from outside.

Night

Just before I slept I was looking out and I suddenly had this strange feeling that I was somewhere else, looking at a similar scene. It reminds me of a screensaver that I started to use because of this. It’s called SurveillanceSaver and it’s basically a screensaver that loads network surveillance camera images from around the world. Like what the web page says, it’s “a haunting live soap opera”. I’m mesmerised by the pictures of places around the world (the images are predominantly from the US, European and Nordic areas) and I always wonder if my computer suddenly shows live images of some horrible stuff happening like a robbery or disaster and I can’t do anything to help.

So yeah you can actually see my half-unpainted room wall. It has been a pain painting the house as our previous wall colour was blue and we changed to a white which the brand calls “Orchid White” and we have to paint the walls over for at least three coats before the blue is completely covered.

In more unrelated stuff, I was bored this morning before going to sleep and snapped a photo of my mum’s Christmas tree in the dark.

Mum's Christmas Tree

My mum loves Christmas trees a lot so she had to hastily make space in the freshly-painted-and-still-messy-with-paint-equipment living room to set up her tree. I love the really bright LEDs. Nowadays when you walk around shopping malls and see the Christmas decorations, they have been using LED lights and I always wonder how awesome it was to have hundreds of white LEDs alight all over the place. I just noticed that in the photo above, there’s some sort of fusion with the Christmas tree and the three Chinese deity statues of Fu, Lu and Shou. Not sure of their story though.

In even more unrelated nonsense, I was just eating some candy:

mmmm

Image taken from Kabaya Shokuhin website

When I looked at the box art and couldn’t help laugh at the face on the soda glass. It looks like the kind of stuff people would randomly photoshop over random objects. It’s some kind of crispy stick candy that comes with a little packet of crazy sour powder which I can’t handle.

Oh, it also reminds me of this.

1/100 00 Gundam – Adding The Waist Joint

14 12 2008

1/100 00 Gundam

Punch for epic victory!!

Once I resolved to add the waist joint into the 00 Gundam, there was no turning back. This is my first successful attempt at modifying a plastic model and I’m glad it worked. Here’s a rundown on how it was done.

First, I had to cut the torso/waist combo block into half to separate the groin from the stomach. My pathetic box cutter couldn’t do the job, so I needed some extra tools. I encountered a mishap with my airbrush where the coil hose broke and I had to get a replacement.

Hasegawa Etching Saw Set

This was what I bought along with my replacement hose yesterday afternoon. It’s a Hasegawa Etching Saw Set (700 yen, $16 SGD ouch) that comes with 4 blades (one is not in the picture). They have various shapes to cut different shaped surfaces. All you do is grab the saw by hand and slowly saw into the surface.

1/100 00 Gundam

Here’s the saw in action. I’m using the large straight blade that has 4 slits at one side. It interlocks with another bit of metal with 4 nubs on them to strengthen the blade. I cut parallel to the edge so that the saw could move smoothly. If the blade goes at an oblique angle to the edge, the serrated edge of the saw snags against the plastic and you can’t move the blade smoothly.

1/100 00 Gundam

After a few minutes’ worth of careful sawing, the block finally broke into two. Look at how clean the cut is. I then sanded the edges to smoothen the surface and repeated the procedure for the other half.

Later in the evening, I went to Daiso and bought several more supplies. I finally got myself a craft knife and some spare blades at $2 SGD each as a much cheaper alternative to an X-acto knife. I bought a cutting mat just to look cool and I also bought a A4 2mm thick expanded PP forming sheet.

If you’re planning to follow the directions of this inexperienced modder, note that you should not use expanded PP. Just waste more cash on some Tamiya clear sheet styrene (which I should have done) which will make your work much easier.

1/100 00 Gundam

Using the PP sheet, I cut a pair of + – shaped blocks to cover the holes left after the cut. Being 2mm thick they were pretty difficult to cut but were rather rigid. I matched the joint holes to the upper waist joint and drilled 3mm holes (using a previously bought pin vise from Daiso too) in the two blocks as well as the large joining peg in the stomach. To make the joint, I cut a stick of leftover sprue from the kit and used the last remaining unused polycap PC F. The stick and polycap diameters were around 3mm too.

You can also see there is a pair of square blocks with a hole in each. This was meant to be used as a holder for the polycap and were supposed to be glued to the + block. However as I had used expanded PP, my Tamiya cement couldn’t work so they were discarded in the end. If you are using sheet styrene, this should be able to work.

1/100 00 Gundam

Here’s a demonstration/test fit of how the stomach will hold the peg. When everything is complete, I will trim the length of the peg to fit.

1/100 00 Gundam

Now on to the groin. There were joining pegs near the affected area which I had to remove to make way for the polycap holder I constructed. These were removed using a Brotherly Combination of the etching saw and my craft knife. I then used a lump of epoxy putty to hold the polycap holder in place inside. The leftover sprue was used to keep the assembly intact during construction.

1/100 00 Gundam

I took the risk of discarding the square holders on both sides of the polycap and wrapped the putty around the polycap snugly instead. When hardened, the putty should keep the polycap trapped. If sheet styrene were used, the entire assembly would be glued and inserted into the groin using epoxy putty. Right after getting it into place, the leftover runner was then pulled out, keeping everything else intact. This picture was taken in the morning, but the putty should take 24 hours to harden.

1/100 00 Gundam

I then proceeded to glue the leftover runner sprue inside the stomach. The + block would then go and putty would be used to keep it in place if needed.

When everything is cured, the leftover sprue stick, now reborn and given a new life as a peg, would be trimmed to the correct length. Lastly, I would use Tamiya putty to cover up the gaps and give a flat surface.

dsc00114resized

I also bought a roll of holographic tape from Daiso. Now I’m wondering whether I should use this in place of the stickers provided by the kit or paint the lenses Keita-style (ie. silver on back, clear green on front). Doing it like this seems nicer as painting the inside clear green would still make the lens look colourless when viewed side-on.

1/100 00 Gundam

Everything put back together. The next step would be to fill up any holes and gaps with Tamiya putty.

In Progress: 1/100 00 Gundam

11 12 2008

1/100 00 Gundam

Here’s a quick shot of the 1/100 00 Gundam. It’s straight-built and the clear parts are not assembled except for the head. You can see how good the silver tape eyes are. Absolutely no photoshopping required. I also hand-painted the red clear sensor on the forehead but I may strip the paint and redo it with my airbrush.

1/100 00 Gundam

More shiny eye goodness.

1/100 00 Gundam

This blur picture was taken with only my room light on. The GN Drives messed the colour balance of the picture. You can also see light leaking from the peak of the cones. Bandai’s solution to that was to stick a black sticker over the LED.

I also spent over $50 SGD on the following supplies today:

  1. Mr. Color Leveling Thinner 400
  2. Mr. Surfacer 1000
  3. Tamiya Basic Putty
  4. Mr. Color Cobalt Blue
  5. Mr. Color Flat White
  6. Mr. Color Chrome Silver
  7. 3 x Mr. Spare Bottle

I had to waste cash on the 400ml bottle of thinner as the shop didn’t stock any kind of thinner in a metal container. I’m wondering if there’s a cheap alternative to Mr. Color Thinner. If I were using Tamiya Acrylic paints I could use alcohol, but I don’t think it mixes with Mr. Color paints. The Cobalt Blue is for the 00 Gundam. The colour seems just right, but I’m planning to try a slightly lighter hue. I decided to buy the Chrome Silver (which came with an awesome shiny label) because the shopkeeper claimed it was the shiniest variant of silver available. The Silver that I have just isn’t shiny enough.

My plans for this 00 Gundam may also include, apart from the slightly lighter colour scheme, the addition of waist articulation which Bandai omitted. Gotta get to work mixing colours and filling up my Mr. Spare Bottles…

edit: oh God WordPress just returned me a failure error when I tried publishing.

1/100 00 Gundam Lack of Progress

10 12 2008

Work on my 1/100 00 Gundam will be put on hold for some time as I have recently acquired an airbrush and am getting to terms with reality now.

The Gundam itself is pretty much built out of the box, but work on the weapons has yet to begin. Work on the clear eyes was nerve-wracking as I decided to settle for cut silver tape eyes. Took several tries to get them symmetrical due to the very large error margin and now one eye is loose as I had to remove it and trim it to look like its counterpart. The results are pretty good compared to other methods. Painting a clear colour on the eyes with silver painted behind won’t work (I tried it before :( ) as the plastic is too thick to capture any light. Using silver tape yielded better results as the eyes were readily reflecting light and due to their tiny size gave off some depth, at least to me.

Hand-painting the clear parts never resulted in a uniform coat of paint so the new airbrush is a blessing, that is until I start to use it in full force. I have to get a large volume of thinner and more jars to store the mixed colours that I am planning to do. I also have to get supplies such as Mr. Surfacer and Tamiya Basic Putty now. I am considering to give my 00 Gundam a slightly lighter colour scheme. Same goes for the O Raiser if I get it.

So if any readers were looking for a fast 1/100 00 Gundam review, sorry, you won’t find any here. I will take a long time to complete mine. Hopefully not as long as my previous HG 1/100 Tallgeese.
